Solanum lycopersicum 'Tommy Toe' is a highly productive heirloom cherry tomato variety originating from the Ozark Mountains in the early 1900s. For optimal germination, maintain soil temperature between 21-29°C (70-85°F) using a heat mat if necessary; seeds germinate fastest at 24-27°C (75-80°F) in 5-14 days. Seeds do not require light during germination but need darkness; cover lightly with soil. Use sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix to prevent damping off. Press seeds firmly into moist soil at 0.5-0.75 inch depth for good contact. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; maintain humidity with a clear plastic dome until germination appears. Once seedlings emerge, immediately remove dome and provide 14-16 hours of bright light daily, positioned 2-4 inches above seedlings to prevent legginess. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date. Soil temperatures below 12°C significantly inhibit germination; do not plant outdoors until soil has warmed and danger of frost has passed. Avoid overwatering, which causes fungal issues and seed rot.
