Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to prevent damping off. Tomato seeds do not require light to germinate, so keep them in darkness during germination—cover seeds with a humidity dome or plastic wrap to maintain high humidity. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in sterile seed-starting mix and press lightly for good soil contact. Once seedlings emerge, remove humidity cover and immediately provide bright grow lights (14-16 hours daily) at 72°F to prevent leggy growth and fungal diseases. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date. Avoid overwatering and ensure good drainage; overly moist conditions promote seed rot and fungal growth.
