Tips
For fastest germination (5-6 days), maintain soil temperature at 75-85°F using a horticultural heat mat, with 75-80°F being optimal. Seeds do not require light to germinate but must be lightly pressed into soil for good seed-to-soil contact. Use sterile, soilless seed-starting mix and keep consistently moist (not waterlogged) under high humidity. Bottom watering is strongly recommended to prevent damping-off disease. Once seedlings emerge (about 75% of tray), provide bright light for 14-16 hours daily and reduce temperature to 60-70°F to prevent leggy growth. Avoid planting too deeply—seeds should be 1/4 inch deep maximum. Transplant into 3-inch pots when seedlings develop 2-3 true leaves. Harden off gradually over 7-10 days before transplanting outdoors after the last frost date when soil temperature reaches at least 70°F (ideally 60°F minimum air temperature).
