Solanum lycopersicum 'German Pink' is a prestigious Bavarian heirloom tomato brought to the United States in 1883 by Michael Ott, great-grandfather of Seed Savers Exchange co-founder Diane Ott Whealy. This indeterminate variety produces large, pink beefsteak fruits weighing 1-2 pounds with meaty, nearly seedless flesh and exceptional sweet flavor. German Pink seeds require warm soil temperatures (70-85°F, ideally 80°F) for reliable germination, typically sprouting in 5-14 days under optimal conditions.

Tips

Start seeds indoors 6 weeks before the last frost date in moist, sterile seed-starting mix at a depth of 1/4 inch. Maintain consistent soil temperature of 75-85°F using a heating mat for optimal germination. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged; bottom watering is recommended to prevent fungal issues. Once seedlings emerge, remove covers and provide bright light for 14-16 hours daily at 60-70°F. Transplant to 3-4 inch pots when true leaves appear. This variety prefers bottom heat during germination and benefits from consistent moisture and good airflow to prevent damping off. Bury transplants deeply, leaving only top leaves above ground.
