Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as tomato, is one of the most popular homegrown vegetables. Originating from Central and South America, it is a warm-season annual crop requiring heat and sunlight. Seeds are best started indoors and germinate readily under proper warm, moist conditions.

What to expect
Tips
Use heat mats to maintain 75-85°F soil temperature for faster germination. Cover seeds lightly with soil and press down gently for good contact. Maintain high humidity during germination with a dome or plastic cover. Once seedlings emerge, remove the dome and provide bright light to prevent leggy growth. Water from below to avoid damping-off disease. Optimal conditions include 70-85°F soil temperature with 70% humidity. Bottom heat can significantly speed up germination.
