Ricinus communis (castor bean) is a fast-growing tropical plant in the Euphorbiaceae family. Native to tropical East Africa, Mediterranean and Indian regions, it is now widespread in warm climates. Seeds contain 40-60% oil and germinate readily under warm conditions with simple pre-treatment.

Tips
Optimal germination occurs at 25°C and 32°C; at 8°C no germination occurs; temperatures above 35°C compromise seedling establishment. Seeds remain viable 2-3 years. Best started indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Seed coat mechanical resistance controls germination timing. CAUTION: All plant parts extremely toxic due to ricin content; handle with gloves; keep away from children and pets.
