Puya weberiana, commonly known as Pink Puya or Desert Lantern, is a spectacular terrestrial bromeliad endemic to the high elevation grasslands of the Andes in Argentina. This monocarpic species produces a magnificent short-stalked inflorescence densely covered with bright pink, woolly bracts. Seeds require light exposure to germinate and prefer cool to moderate temperatures typical of its native high-altitude habitat.

Tips

Sow seeds directly on the substrate surface—do NOT bury them, as light is critical for germination. Keep substrates moist but well-drained. Provide bright indirect light from fluorescent or LED lamps rather than direct sunlight. Maintain temperatures between 18-26°C (64-79°F). Germination can occur in 2-4 weeks under proper conditions. Acclimate seedlings for 8-12 weeks before transplanting to permanent locations. Use a propagator or heat mat to maintain warm, humid conditions. Alternative method: germinate seeds between two damp paper towels in a sealed clear plastic bag on a heat mat under light.
