Protea magnifica, commonly known as Queen Protea, is an evergreen shrub native to the southwestern Cape region of South Africa, belonging to the ancient Proteaceae family. This species requires smoke treatment, specific temperature fluctuations with a 10-12°C day-night difference, and careful moisture management for successful seed germination. Seeds exhibit somewhat unpredictable germination starting as early as 21 days but continuing for up to two months.
Before sowing
Dip seed into fungicide solution such as Thiram after smoke-water treatment. Optional: soak in seed-safe fungicide or 1% hydrogen peroxide for 24 hours

Tips
Sow in autumn or spring when day-night temperature differences are greatest. Sterilize soil by drenching with boiling water before planting. Use rainwater if possible, as tap water with chlorine or salts can inhibit germination. Keep seedlings in semi-shade with 30% shade-cloth protection during germination. Water early morning with fine spray to maintain moisture without waterlogging. Never allow growing medium to completely dry out. Do not use hothouses, bottom heat, or glass covers as heat and still air encourage fungal infection. Once true leaves appear, gradually expose seedlings to full sun. Protect from pests (mice, birds, insects). Avoid chemical fertilizers and phosphates, as protea roots are extremely sensitive. Do not disturb the fine root system during transplanting. Seedling growth is slow; expect 5-6 years before flowering.
