Pithecellobium dulce, commonly known as Manila tamarind or Madras thorn, is a fast-growing nitrogen-fixing tree native to Mexico and Central America. The species germinates readily within 7-21 days without pre-treatment, making it an easy seed to work with for both commercial and ornamental propagation. Its edible sweet-tart seed pulp and hardy growth characteristics have made it widely naturalized throughout tropical regions worldwide.

Tips

Sow seeds immediately after collection for best results, as viability declines after 2-3 months. Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged during germination. Provide bright, indirect light and warm temperatures (24-29°C). After germination, seedlings can be transplanted to larger containers or nursery beds when they develop their first true leaves. Thin out overcrowded seedlings. Plants benefit from organic potting mix with good drainage. Young seedlings may need light shade protection in intense tropical sun. Transplant seedlings to their permanent location at 12 months of age for best establishment.
