Pachypodium mikea is a rare, palmlike succulent tree native to dry forests of southwestern Madagascar, characterized by its thick columnar trunk and spiny branches. Seeds germinate rapidly, typically within 3-12 days under proper warm and moist conditions. This species is relatively easy to propagate from seed, making it accessible even to novice growers.

Before sowing

Soak
3 h Soak seeds in warm water at 30°C (86°F) for 3 hours before sowing. Seeds are ready for planting when most sink to the bottom. Use non-chlorinated water.

Seeds benefit from warm water soaking prior to sowing to improve germination rates.

Sowing

Substrate
Well-draining mineral-based substrate composed of perlite, cactus soil, sand, and pebbles. Sterilize components before use. Substrate must be pathogen-free and sterile.

Tips

Soak seeds in warm water (30°C/86°F) for 3 hours before sowing. Sow seeds on mineral soil surface or cover lightly with sand (3-5mm). Keep substrate consistently moist during germination but not waterlogged. Maintain temperatures between 20-35°C (68-95°F), ideally 25°C (77°F). Provide bright, indirect light—avoid direct sunlight during initial germination. Cover container with transparent foil, glass, or ziplock bag to maintain humidity; open every 2-3 days to check moisture and check for germination. Remove cover once most seeds have germinated. Transfer seedlings to individual containers at approximately 1 inch (3cm) height. Maintain moist soil and indirect light for 2 months post-germination. Acclimatize seedlings for 6-8 weeks before transplanting to permanent containers. Keep minimum temperature above 10°C during winter dormancy.
