Metrosideros excelsa, commonly known as the New Zealand Christmas Tree or Pohutukawa, is an iconic evergreen tree native to coastal regions of northern New Zealand, renowned for its spectacular crimson flowers. Seeds are light-dependent for germination and do not require pre-treatment; they should be sown fresh for best viability and germinate readily under warm, bright conditions within 3-6 months.

Tips
Spread seeds on surface of moist substrate without covering, as they require light to germinate. Maintain constant humidity by covering container with glass or plastic lid. Keep in warm location (20-25°C) with bright light but protected from direct sunlight. Mist regularly to maintain moisture. Germination is slow and can take several weeks to months. Use fresh seeds as germination viability decreases rapidly after storage at room temperature. After germination, acclimate seedlings gradually before transplanting. Grow seedlings in greenhouse for at least first two winters before planting outdoors.
