Metasequoia glyptostroboides, commonly known as Dawn Redwood, is a fast-growing deciduous conifer native to remote valleys in south-central China. Once thought extinct and known only from fossil records, it was rediscovered in 1941 and is now recognized as a living fossil with germination characteristics adapted to its native cool, moist winter environment. Seeds require cold stratification and light exposure to germinate successfully.

Before sowing

Stratification
fria · 30 d · 4°C
Soak
24 h Soak in warm water (not hot) for 24 hours before stratification. Discard floating seeds as they are non-viable.

Stratification for 30-60 days at 4°C (40°F) in moist sand or vermiculite is most effective. Soaking followed by cold stratification breaks dormancy.

Tips

Do not cover seeds with substrate—press them lightly onto moist soil surface as they require light for germination. After stratification, place in warm (18-22°C), bright location with high humidity (cover with plastic dome). Maintain consistently moist (not waterlogged) substrate. Seeds are positively photoblastic and have naturally low viability (5-35%). Very small seeds—handle carefully. Once germinated, provide strong indirect light and allow soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Keep seedlings warm and in bright conditions.
