Ligustrum japonicum, commonly known as Japanese Privet or Wax-leaf Privet, is an evergreen shrub native to Japan, Korea, and southeastern China. It is valued for its glossy dark green foliage, creamy-white fragrant flowers, and ornamental black berries. Seed germination can be slow and erratic, typically requiring cold stratification of 30-90 days to improve germination rates, though fresh seeds may germinate within 60 days without pretreatment.

Tips

Fall sowing in mulched outdoor beds is preferred to artificial cold stratification and yields better seedling establishment. Keep substrate moist but not waterlogged during germination. Seeds have a hard coat and benefit from scarification; soaking in water for 24 hours is recommended. Germination is slow and may take 4-8 weeks; maintain consistent moisture and cool temperatures (around 4°C) during stratification. For spring sowing, provide cold stratification for at least 30-60 days. After germination, grow seedlings in bright conditions with moderate humidity.
