Hakea laurina, commonly known as Pincushion Hakea or Kodjet, is an admired native shrub from southwestern Australia with distinctive red, cream, or pink globular flowers that bloom in autumn and winter. Seeds germinate readily using conventional methods, and the included Smoke Seed Primer further enhances germination success by stimulating dormancy release. This evergreen species typically reaches 2.5-6 meters in height and can be trained as either a shrub or small tree.
Before sowing
Smoke treatment with included primer improves germination success by stimulating dormant seeds. Germinates well by conventional methods without treatment, but smoke primer enhances results.
Sowing
What to expect
Tips
Soak seeds in smoke primer solution for 24 hours before sowing. Use well-drained sandy or light loam potting mix and keep moist but not waterlogged. Sow seeds lightly covered or on the surface. Maintain temperature around 19-21°C. Cover pots with clear plastic and remove when germination begins (3-5 weeks). After germination, keep seedlings moist during the first year. Transplant when 10-15 cm tall (4-6 months). Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilizers; use phosphorus-free formulations designed for Australian natives. The species tolerates light frost and drought once established but prefers full sun for compact form and prolific flowering.
