Gynostemma pentaphyllum, commonly known as jiaogulan or immortality herb, is a dioecious herbaceous climbing vine from the Cucurbitaceae family native to mountainous regions of Asia. The species exhibits seed dormancy requiring specific pre-treatment protocols. Germination is typically slow and erratic, ranging from 14 to 42 days under optimal warm conditions following cold stratification.

Seeds exhibit dormancy. Short-term cold stratification (5-10 days at 5-10°C) followed by warm germination conditions (15-25°C) is effective. GA4 hormone treatment can enhance germination rate for dormant seeds

Tips

Keep substrate moist but not soggy; germination is inconsistent, so plant 2-3 seeds per pot about 1 inch apart. Use seedling trays filled with loose, airy substrate (mineral-organic mixture). Seeds are easily damaged and must be handled with care. Provide light after germination but seeds can germinate in darkness. Grow lights (12+ hours/day) or partial sunlight accelerates seedling development. Maintain temperature around 21-22°C for optimal germination. Both male and female plants are required for seed production. Seedlings appreciate well-drained, humus-rich soil and consistent moisture during establishment.
