Ephedra nevadensis, commonly known as Nevada Jointfir or Mormon Tea, is a dioecious desert shrub native to western North America. Seeds are physiologically dormant and require cold stratification at 3-5°C for 21 days to overcome dormancy, followed by warm alternating temperatures for successful germination.

Tips
Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep and tamp soil firmly. Apply mulch to seed bed. Seeds normally germinate in 7-30 days at diurnally alternating temperatures of 86°F day and 68°F night. Germination can be irregular; some seeds may germinate in 14-28 days while others may delay to the following year. Ensure well-drained soil; high salinity tolerance is a species characteristic. Fresh seeds show highest viability (84-94%); avoid storing seeds at room temperature for extended periods as germination ability decreases significantly.
