Echinocactus platyacanthus (Giant Barrel Cactus) is an endemic Mexican cactus, the largest of all barrel cacti. It is heavily exploited for acitrón candy production and listed as vulnerable to extinction. Germination requires warm temperatures, consistent moisture, light, and seed pretreatment.

Tips
Seeds should be surface-sown with light exposure. MS medium at 50% concentration yielded highest germination (70%) in 28 days. Ex vitro germination in black soil achieved 60%. Growth regulators (BAP or ANA at 0.5 mgL-1) accelerate seedling development. Maintain 16h light/8h darkness. Avoid waterlogged conditions. Seedlings require protection from extreme temperatures. Slower germination in Querétaro populations (22%) suggests regional variation in seed quality.
