Dovyalis hebecarpa, commonly known as Ceylon Gooseberry or Ketembilla, is a tropical shrub or small tree native to Sri Lanka and southern India, prized for its small, tart, dark purple fruits used in jams and juices. Seeds require warm temperatures (25-30°C), soil moisture, and light to germinate, typically sprouting within 2-8 weeks. The species exhibits no seed dormancy and benefits from pre-sowing water soaking to promote faster and more uniform germination.

Tips

Soak seeds for 12-24 hours in tepid water and dry thoroughly before sowing. Use a well-draining substrate with equal parts peat and perlite. Sow seeds lightly on the soil surface without covering or press gently. Maintain consistently moist substrate and warm temperatures (25-30°C) in a covered container. Keep seedlings in bright light without direct sun. Germination occurs within 2-8 weeks. Seedlings are very sensitive to transplanting; wait until they are strong with 3-4 leaves before moving to individual containers. Transplant only on overcast days to minimize stress. Avoid waterlogging as it can cause damping off and root rot.
