Desmanthus virgatus is a perennial legume forage species native to tropical and subtropical Americas, characterized by bipinnate fern-like leaves and small pale flowers. Seeds possess physical dormancy with extremely hard seed coats requiring pre-treatment before sowing.

Before sowing

Scarification
quimica Concentrated H2SO4 for 2 minutes achieves 60.3% germination; 10 minutes achieves 93% germination. Mechanical scarification with sandpaper also effective (48% germination). Hot water treatment 4-10 seconds achieves 50-70% germination.
Smoke / fire
Fire treatment at 0.5-3.0 cm depth increases germination up to 80%; grass fire temperatures on surface kill seeds.

Physical dormancy due to hard seed coat. Combination of H2SO4 (25-30 min) + sandpaper scarification produces 94.6-96% normal seedlings.

Step 2

Day 7–14
Seedlings emerge (~60%)

Tips

Seeds respond better to mechanical or chemical scarification than hot water alone. Merchant-treated seed typically has 50-70% soft seed for good first germination while maintaining hard seed reserve. Do not plant deeper than 2cm as this delays or prevents emergence. Requires specific rhizobium inoculation (CB3126) for nitrogen fixation.
