Delonix regia, commonly known as the Royal Poinciana or Flame Tree, is a striking tropical tree native to Madagascar with brilliant red-orange flowers and fern-like foliage. The species exhibits seed dormancy due to its hard seed coat and requires pre-treatment to achieve reliable germination. With proper hot water scarification and consistent warm temperatures, germination typically occurs within 2-3 weeks, making it moderately easy to propagate from seed.

Before sowing

Scarification
agua_quente Submerge seeds in hot tap water (around 110°F/43°C) and leave to soak for 24 hours. Any seeds that have not swollen should be placed in fresh hot water and soaked again. Alternatively, mechanical scarification on the rounded end using sandpaper or nail clippers can be combined with hot water soaking. Boiling water can be used if hot tap water does not scarify the seed adequately.
Soak
24 h Submerge scarified seeds in hot water at approximately 110°F (43°C) for 24 hours. Select only those seeds that have visibly swollen; re-treat any non-responsive seeds with fresh hot water. Avoid over-soaking as seeds may rot if soaked longer than 24 hours.

Pre-treatment is essential. Seeds have a hard, woody testa that requires scarification plus hot water immersion to break dormancy. Hot water treatment for 20 minutes combined with mechanical scarification produces optimal results.

Tips

Select imbibed seeds that have visibly swollen after hot water treatment; discard non-responsive seeds. Sow imbibed seeds 1/4 inch (approximately 0.6 cm) deep, tamp soil firmly, and mulch the seed bed. Provide bright, indirect light and maintain soil moisture without waterlogging. Use a heating mat to maintain consistent temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C) for optimal germination. Once scarified, seeds are sensitive to extended soaking; limit immersion to 24 hours maximum. Avoid scarifying the pointed end where the radicle emerges; scarify only the rounded end. Young seedlings grow rapidly and will develop several feet of growth in their first year if not contained.
