Banksia hookeriana, commonly known as Hooker's Banksia, is an Australian native shrub belonging to the Proteaceae family, native to the sandy, well-drained soils of Western Australia. This serotinous species has evolved to respond to bushfire smoke signals and produces striking orange-gold flower spikes that attract honeyeaters. Germination can be significantly improved with smoke treatment (Smoke Seed Primer), which simulates the natural fire-triggered cues; however, seeds do not strictly require smoke treatment and will eventually germinate under appropriate warm, moist conditions.

Seeds immersed in Smoke Seed Primer solution (made by dissolving disc in 50ml water) for 18-24 hours in rainwater, or alternative warm water treatment at 18-22°C until swollen. Sow immediately after treatment for best results.

Tips
Maintain well-lit location without direct sun exposure. Open container lid every 2-3 days to check moisture levels and exchange air. Keep substrate moist but never waterlogged; excess moisture can cause seed rot. Use artificial lighting (LED or fluorescent) if natural light is insufficient. Do not apply phosphorus-rich fertilizers during or after germination, as Banksia species are highly sensitive to phosphorus. Patience is essential—some seeds may remain dormant for extended periods and germinate outside the normal window. Once seedlings are 5-10 cm tall with true leaves established, carefully transplant to individual containers with well-draining sandy soil and gradually acclimate before final planting. Avoid disturbance of seedlings during germination phase.
