Alcea rosea 'Double Rose Pink' is a classic biennial or short-lived perennial hollyhock from the Chater's Double series, renowned for its large, fully double soft pink flowers. Native to Turkey and western Asia, this cottage garden favorite grows 6-8 feet tall and germinates readily at temperatures between 15-21°C, making it an easy-to-grow ornamental that attracts bees and butterflies. Seeds require light to germinate and should be sown indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden after frost danger has passed.

Tips

Sow seeds on the surface of moist seed compost or lightly cover with vermiculite; seeds need light to germinate so avoid burying deeply. Maintain soil temperature of 15-21°C and consistent moisture during germination (10-21 days). Provide bright, indirect light during germination and reduce temperature to 12°C after seedlings emerge. Start indoors 2 months before the last frost date for first-year flowering, or sow directly in spring after frost danger passes (plants will flower the following year). Use well-drained, moderately fertile loamy soil enriched with compost. Provide full sun and support plants with stakes if in exposed locations. Prevent fungal rust by ensuring good air circulation and spacing plants 60cm apart.
