Adansonia digitata, the African baobab, is the most widespread tree species of the genus Adansonia and is native to dry, hot savannas of sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula. Its seeds exhibit strong physical dormancy due to a hard, thick seed coat that prevents water and oxygen penetration. Germination success in nature depends on heat exposure from wildfires or prolonged sun exposure, which breaks the seed's dormancy through tannin decomposition.

Tips
1. Scarify seeds mechanically (scratch or nick the seed coat) before soaking for highest germination rates. 2. Use warm water (75-100°C) soaking for 5 minutes followed by 24-hour cooling soak. 3. Keep soil consistently moist but not saturated during germination. 4. Maintain temperatures above 24°C (75°F) for optimal germination. 5. Place in bright location with indirect light; direct sunlight acceptable once germinated. 6. Monitor closely for damping-off fungus; provide good air circulation. 7. Do not bury seeds deeply; sow shallow (4-6mm depth) in sand or seedling mix. 8. Germination may take 1-6 weeks depending on treatment method. 9. Transplant seedlings (50mm tall) into individual containers with sandy soil mixed with well-rotted compost and bone meal. 10. African baobabs germinate much more easily than other Adansonia species (near 100% success vs. 50% for other species).
