Abies alba, the European silver fir, is a long-lived, large evergreen conifer native to the mountain regions of central and southern Europe. The species is moderately easy to germinate with short, easily-broken dormancy that is overcome by cold stratification. Autumn outdoor sowing or 6-8 weeks of moist-cold stratification followed by spring sowing produces reliable germination.

Germination begins within 10-14 days of sowing at room temperature. Keep seedlings in bright light and maintain consistent moisture; prevent damping-off by ensuring adequate spacing and avoiding excessive humidity. Autumn sowing directly into mulched outdoor beds is often preferred over indoor stratification. Seedlings grow slowly initially but accelerate from age 4-6 years onward.
